Original tracks produced by: Jess Roden, Bronco & Richard Digby Smith
Label: Fox Records
Released: 2004
WARNING - WARNING - WARNING - WARNING
IF you find this (and, sure, its a bit of a rarity) at a record store / record fair or similar then you should know that - while JR's name is (inexplicably) attached to this compilation - his authorisation was neither sought or, indeed, given.
In short... this is NOT an official compilation... BUT, a bootleg cobbled together from vinyl or casette transfers.
The running order for Country Home has, for reasons unknown, been shuffled around; Kevyn Gammond's name is miss-spelled as 'Kevin'; there is also audible audio damage on a number of tracks plus many of the cuts also sound muffled.
While purporting to be the real thing... the real thing it is not!

Some notes:
Traffic / Every Mother's Son is clearly (audibly) a different mix to that which came out on John Barleycorn
Bronco / Love - again, a different mix to that which appeared on Country Home - on the Bumpers sleeve / label both album title and Island catalogue number are incorectly listed
Spooky Tooth / Walrus... compared to The Last Puff, there is part of the guitar solo missing at the end...
Quintessence / Jesus, Buddha... altho' not credited as such, this is a live recording
King Crimosn / Cadence And Cascade - fades out at least thirty seconds early
Free / Oh I Wept - for the Free completists since this is an entirely different vocal take
Nick Drake / Hazey Jane - without doubt a different mix to the one appearing on Bryter Layter

Notes: Bumpers was released in 1970, way, way before the advent of MP3s; a time when CDs or even PCs hadn't even been dreamed up.
Record companies – by and large spear-headed by Island – compiled single, double and even triple-album sets consisting of mainly new or unreleased tracks by artists that the vast majority new little or nothing about interspersed by a few from acts that had already broken through. These were not intended as anthologies or compilations; the purpose being to allow listeners the opportunity to ‘sample’ a range of acts at a reduced price; showcasing those for whom there wasn’t necessarily a singles market meaning little chance of UK radio play. The secondary ethic being – if you like the artists you knew about, then you may well like the unreleased ‘stuff’ we’re putting with it. Not just that, but these ‘sampler’ albums were priced at a lot less that wallet-bursting.
Columbia’s “The Rock Machine Turns You On & The Rock Machine I Love You” together with Liberty Records “Gutbucket” started the trend, as Island weighed in with “Nice Enough to Eat” and “You Can All Join In” - both issued in 1969.
Bumpers was released in 1970 - the year that 18 year olds got the vote and women got equal pay; the year that the first transatlantic Boeing 747 flight arrived at Heathrow and Britons got a taste of the new decimal currency ahead of decimalization; the year of the Isle Of Wight festival which starred Jimi Hendrix (shortly before his death in London); the year that The Beatles parted ways and the year in which this two album set could be aquired for 29/11 (thats in old UK coinage) - in today's terms that 1.50 or $2.00.
The album was issued in two pressings; one with the pink label and "i" logo, the other with the label displaying a palm motif on a white background and a pink rim.
There are subtle differences between the recordings although the variations on overseas versions were much more fundamental, with a wholly different selection of tracks for the Antipodes. In addition the sleeve notes and label information are shoddily compiled.
Album name: comes from the fact that the distinctive basketball-style shoes depicted as the cover image were immensley popular in Britain at the time and were known as... Bumpers.
Sleeve: by Tony Wright - his first ever Island Records sleeve - and, to this date, Tony has probably designed more sleeves for the label than any other artist / designer. He later went on to design the sleeve for the JRB album, Play It Dirty, Play It Class.
Allegedly – and in a homage to a Warhol take on a theme – there were eight different sleeve-variants on the Bumpers theme; although the yellow / red variant is the one that is known.
Although uncredited, it is possible that Tony also devised the 'bamboo lettering' design for the Bronco logo - occasionally used for concert advertising - most seen during their shows with the likes of Free.

Label: Island
Released: 2009
Notes: One of three Island compilations to celebrate the label's 50th anniversary.
This 3 CD set covers the folk / rock genre within Island's history and includes extensive sleevenotes written by Dave Suff, head of Fledgling Records (compilers of the Sandy Denny - Boxful Of Treasures set).
One reviewer - writing on Play.com had this to say... Stand out tracks include Fairport,Traffic and the excellent Bronco (the UK band) fronted by the underrated Jess Roden. How they never became as big as CSNY I will never understand.
Mark Barry of Reckless Records in London said (reviewing this compilation on Amazon)... even better is Bronco's "Time Slips Away" from their 1971 album "Ace Of Sunlight" - a fantastic choice - Jess Roden's soulful vocals backed up by Robbie Blunt's tremendous guitar work |
